View your Website like a Search Engine does…

Many people still think about their websites as a beautiful home page, with a number of pages attached to it; but rarely the other way around.   That’s short-sighted.  Your website is really a collection of pages, with each page providing information about a specific topic or two.

Think about this way, the only visitors [likely] to begin at your home page are those who came to you directly – typing in your URL (www.KitchenMarketing.com) or clicking a referral link.  Those visitors who are using Google, Yahoo!, Bing or other search engines typically will find their way to your website via an internal page.

Why?  Because of the words on that page in relationship to the query they entered in the search engine.  In other words, if I go to Google and type in “kitchen cabinets” theoretically, the page in your site that is about kitchen cabinets will appear in the results higher than your home page (if it appears at all).

Each page in your site should focus on a specific topic and set of keywords/phrases – making content king!  The keywords you choose may differ slightly from your competitors, varying your placement based on the query.  For example, your page may be higher with “kitchen cabinets”, while your competitor may rank higher with “kitchen cabinetry”.  It’s all about the keywords you have chosen to highlight and use in your page copy.

Consider each page as an answer to a query.  You know how fast you hit the back button, if the information you queried doesn’t jump out at you… your visitors will do the same thing.  Therefore as you (re)design and (re)develop your website, plan each page around the keywords/phrases by which you want to be found, and write the copy accordingly.
